My Take on The Aesthetic Cruise 2013

aesthetic_cruise_2013

Earlier this summer, I attended The Aesthetic Cruise 2013 – hosted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) – where I presented three lectures and moderated two panels of discussion. The focus of the cruise was to collaborate with medical peers and colleagues about possible complications that may arise in aesthetic surgery and how to avoid these complications for a number of different procedures.

As a lecturer, the main points I facilitated were complications of breast augmentation and how to set an inframammary crease to avoid double bubbles with breast implants. I also spoke about the possible complications of simultaneously performing a breast lift with augmentation, and I delved into some of the issues we typically see with injectable fillers and lasers. Lastly, I touched on difficult facelift cases and explored what it takes to avoid facial rejuvenation complications in these particular instances.

As a moderator, my main goal was to facilitate questions and direct a bit of controversy toward speakers in order to spark stimulating conversation and collaborative group thinking. In an effort to do so, I often requested that presenters direct their line of lectures in a certain vein to have the discussion culminate in a particular viewpoint that needed be brought to light.

Some interesting new techniques and solutions formulated during the workshop sessions regarded the utilization of certain gummy bear implants and how to avoid some of the problems associated with these new implants. Furthermore, I was particularly intrigued by discussions relating to which injectables can be utilized to avoid different facial rejuvenation complications, and what surgeons can do to potentially reverse these possible issues.

Ultimately, I felt The Aesthetic Cruise 2013 was extremely worthwhile and I believe what I learned will help me to enhance the level of care I am able to provide my patients. It fostered questions and interaction in such a way that participants would share their own experiences and look for collaboration not only between the speakers and moderator, but also between others who were at the meeting. This proved to be a very effective technique for producing several practical solutions that can be used for a number of common aesthetic surgery complications.
