Orange County Plastic Surgeon Answers Popular Body Contouring Questions

Dr. Daniel Mills of the Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute recently authored three blog posts addressing common inquires for prospective body contouring patients.

Laguna Beach, CA — “In plastic surgery, the term ‘body contouring’ encompasses a full gamut of treatments and procedures (both surgical and nonsurgical) designed to help you restore a slimmer, more youthful-looking figure following substantial weight gain and/or loss,” begins a recent blog post authored by Orange County plastic surgeon Daniel Mills, MD. The article – titled, A Brief Overview of Cosmetic Body Contouring – goes on to list several body contouring options offered at Dr. Mills’ practice, as well as to highlight what perceived cosmetic concerns each procedure is specifically intended to address.

Included among the body contouring options listed in the post are liposuction, CoolSculpting®, tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift, and Vaser® Shape procedures. Results achieved from these procedures are often permanent, says Dr. Mills, granted the patient’s weight does not fluctuate dramatically following the operation. According to another blog entry – At What Weight Should I Be Prior to My Body Contouring Procedure? – the Orange County plastic surgeon recommends this weight fluctuation not exceed more than about 15 pounds to help ensure optimal results are sustained:

“It is always better to undergo body contouring procedures, particularly tummy tuck surgery, when you are at (or very close to) your ideal weight. If you are within 10 to 15 pounds of your goal weight prior to your procedure, I’d say adding or shedding those extra few pounds postsurgically will not typically affect your results in a negative way. However, if you plan to gain or lose more than about 15 pounds after your procedure, you run the risk of compromising your results…”

Regarding what patients can expect as far as postsurgical scarring is concerned, Dr. Mills describes the typical incision placements he utilizes for various procedures in a post titled, Where Are Incisions Made for Body Contouring Procedures? In summation of what is written in the blog entry, Dr. Mills states, “I strive to make incisions in the most discreet locations possible, often where they can be concealed by articles of clothing, or along the line of skin tension to get the best scar. For a tummy tuck, that is in the bikini area, and for a thigh lift, it is where a bikini would cover the outer thigh. The incisions for the arms are on the inside of the arms. I pride myself on the scars and making them as inconspicuous as possible.”
