JUVÉDERM™ Restylane Radiesse Collagen ArteFill

JUVÉDERM™ injectable gel is a "next generation" smooth gel, non-animal dermal filler. JUVÉDERM™ is FDA approved. It is the only dermal filler currently available with the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid and a special formulation process. The process creates a smooth gel that flows easily into the skin, creating smooth natural looks. JUVÉDERM™ provides smooth, long-lasting correction of facial wrinkles and folds, especially around the nose and mouth. JUVÉDERM™ temporarily adds volume to the skin giving the appearance of a smoother surface. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found in normal, healthy skin. The role of hyaluronic acid in the skin is to deliver nutrients, hydrate the skin by holding water, and to act as a cushioning agent.

How long will the results from JUVÉDERM™ injections last?

Most patients need one treatment to achieve immediate, optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last about six months.

What are the possible side effects?

Most side effects are mild or moderate in nature and short lasting (less than a week). Side effects include redness and swelling at the injection site, mild bruising, itching, discoloration, lumpiness and risk of infection. Patients using products such as aspirin or ibuprofen, as with any injection, may experience increased bruising or bleeding at the injection site.

Do JUVÉDERM™ Injections hurt?

JUVÉDERM™ is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultra fine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The smooth consistency of JUVÉDERM™ dermal filler also may help to minimize the discomfort that can sometimes occur during the injection procedure. To make the procedure more comfortable local anesthetic or a topical numbing cream can be used to numb the treatment area.

Starting in 2004, Dr. Mills' office started offering the dermal filler, Restylane to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores fullness to the face. Most frequently, Dr. Mills uses Restylane to fill in the nasolabial folds and enhance the lips, including the vermillion border and/ or the upper and lower red lip. Restylane is the first and only cosmetic dermal filler made of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the body and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is a crystal-clear get called NASHA, or Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. NASHA is biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid. On average, Restylane lasts for six months.

Can Restylane be used anywhere on the face?

Is Restylane safe?

Yes. Restylane has safely been used worldwide by dermatologists and plastic surgeons since 1996. Because Restylane is non-animal-based and fully biocompatible, allergy testing is not required. This quality virtually eliminates any risk of animal-based disease or allergic reaction. The most commonly reported side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within two to three days.

Is Restylane approved by the FDA?

Yes. Restylane is FDA approved for use in the United States. It is only currently indicated for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.

Are there any side effects?

As with any injection, some common injection-related reactions may occur. The most common side effects are temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These typically resolve within two to three days. Additionally, bruising may last four to five days when injecting into the lips.

How is Restylane administered?

Restylane is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts using an ultra fine needle. After the injection the area may be gently massaged to optimize contouring. Restylane is a simple and convenient procedure and results are practically instantaneous.

How often should I have Restylane treatments done?

Restylane lasts about twice as long as bovine collagen, so treatments are typically scheduled twice a year. Evidence shows that having a touch-up treatment before the product has fully dissipated will enhance the lasting effect.

Do Restylane injections hurt?

Resylane is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultra fine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. To make the procedure more comfortable local anesthetic can be used to numb the treatment area.

Can Restylane be used anywhere on the face?

Although Restylane has been used in more than one million treatments in over 60 countries to smooth wrinkles and deep facial folds and to enhance the appearance and fullness of lips, in the U.S., it is currently indicated only for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.

Radiesse is the newest non-surgical facial contouring filler that delivers an immediate, longer lasting result.

Developed with safety and longevity in mind, Radiesse is a new generation injectable filler that offers superior versatility for both cosmetic and reconstructive use without surgery. What sets Radiesse apart from other dermal filler? The answer is in its durability, longevity, and versatility. The unique composition of Radiesse provides immediate visual improvement common with other fillers, along with the benefit of long-lasting results. This is because Radiesse is made of very tiny, smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres. The microspheres (particles) form a scaffold through which your body's own collagen grows, and this produces the desired long-term effect. The unique advantages make Radiesse the ideal choice for facial shaping and contouring.

Dr. Mills offers collagen injections as a filler for the nasolabial folds, lips and lines around the mouth. Dr. Mills also uses collagen to improve deeper creases or enhance lip fullness. There are now two collagen options: Zyplast and Cosmosplast. Zyplast collagen is derived from bovine collagen and requires a skin test to make sure that you do not have allergies to the product. Cosmoplast (also known as "human collagen") is a newer product and is derived from natural human collagen. While this product is a little bit more expensive, Cosmoplast appears to have longer-lasting results and does not require a skin test. Additionally, Cosmoplast appears to be a bit more pliable and less hard to the touch.

Both Zyplast and Cosmoplast contains a local anesthetic and is injected into treatment areas with a tiny needle. Depending on the size of the treatment area, several injections may be needed. Collagen lasts for about 3 - 4 months per treatment and Cosmoplast lasts for about 4 - 6 months per treatment. As such, repeat treatments will be required to maintain results. Again, even though this is a non-surgical technique, it is highly important that you go to an experienced physician or physician's assistant to ensure that you get the results that you are looking for. Possible side effects include bruising, adverse reactions, lumpiness, redness and in rare cases local infection.

ArteFill® is the First FDA-Approved Non-Resorbable Aesthetic Injectable Implant for the Correction of Nasolabial Folds.

ArteFill is a unique dual-acting injectable wrinkle filler. First, ArteFill visibly corrects the wrinkle. Then the microspheres provide the permanent support your skin needs for long-term wrinkle correction.

How does ArteFill work?

ArteFill is a unique dual-acting permanent aesthetic injectable implant that provides both immediate and enduring cosmetic benefits. First, ArteFill visibly corrects the smile line by providing volume beneath the wrinkle, similar to other dermal fillers. Unlike temporary dermal fillers, ArteFill contains microspheres that provide the permanent support structure required to sustain the wrinkle correction. The microspheres are made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), one of the most widely used synthetic implant materials in medicine. Studies have shown that PMMA microspheres are both biocompatible and safe for use as soft tissue fillers. Since macrophages and human enzymes are unable to break down PMMA, the microspheres are not degraded or absorbed by the body. The microspheres are 30 to 50 microns in diameter, barely visible to the naked eye, and are suspended in a purified bovine collagen carrier gel. Once injected, the microspheres reside permanently at the injection site for persistent wrinkle correction.

How is ArteFill different from BOTOX® Cosmetic and temporary dermal fillers?

BOTOX Cosmetic (e.g., botulinum toxin) is a temporary muscle-paralyzing drug, not a dermal filler. Botox Cosmetic is injected directly into the target muscle to block the nerve signals from the brain to the muscles so that they cannot contract. Wrinkles then gradually become smoother due to disuse. The effects last for approximately three to four months. Temporary dermal fillers are made of different kinds of natural or synthetic materials that have been developed over the years for injection into the skin. The materials in these products are completely metabolized and absorbed by the body over time. As a result, the aesthetic benefits of these temporary dermal fillers decrease over time, and generally last up to six months. Unlike Botox and existing temporary dermal fillers, ArteFill contains microspheres made of PMMA. These microspheres are not absorbed or degraded by the human body. Following injection, the PMMA microspheres in ArteFill remain intact at the injection site and provide a permanent structure to support the wrinkle and help prevent further wrinkling. As a result, we believe that ArteFill will provide patients with aesthetic benefits that may last for years. This innovative technology platform has created a new category of aesthetic injectable product known as Permanent Aesthetic Injectable Implant™.
