How Long Is Recovery After Eyelid Surgery?

Recovery after eyelid surgery, medically referred to as blepharoplasty, varies greatly from patient-to-patient. The healing process will differ based on the techniques used in your specific procedure. Another factor of the recovery time will be based on how well you care for yourself post-surgery. Typically, normal routines can resume after a few days; however, strenuous activities should be avoided for at least a few weeks. While specific post-surgery instructions will be provided for you once you undergo the procedure, Daniel C. Mills, MD, FACS has created a list of generally recommended guidelines for patients to follow that can help recovery go smoothly:

Any swelling or bruising can be expected to diminish after 7-10 days. However, for this to hold true, it is important that you are diligent about icing the treatment area for the first 3 days following the procedure. If ice is not frequently applied, swelling and bruising may take up to 3 weeks to lessen. While improvements can be seen once the swelling and bruising have subsided, final results may take 3 to 6 months to be completely noticeable.
