Correcting Breast Implant Asymmetry without Revision Surgery
What Is Implant Asymmetry?
Implant asymmetry refers to a visible difference in the size, shape, or position of the breasts following breast augmentation surgery. This imbalance is caused by implant displacement, when one or both implants shift from their intended position during the healing process. While this complication is rare when the procedure is performed by our Laguna Beach plastic surgeon, it is still liable to occur – causing one breast appearing higher, lower, more projected, or differently shaped than the other.
Traditionally, noticeable breast asymmetry resulting from implant malposition has required revision surgery to correct. With this in mind, Dr. Dan Mills has developed an innovative technique that can resolve certain types of asymmetry without the need for additional surgery. This non-surgical approach – called the “shoelace breast cast” – is described in greater detail below.
The “Shoelace Breast Cast” Technique
In Dr. Mills’ experience, placing shoelaces underneath the inframammary fold of the breast early in the postoperative period can often reduce the appearance of a “double bubble,” correct breast asymmetry, and decrease projection of the lower pole of the breast. Additionally, the shoelace “breast cast” can support the weight of the breasts, as the new inframammary crease sets in an ideal position during the healing process. Overall, the combination of these advantages may eliminate the need for breast revision surgery should asymmetry caused by implant displacement be an issue.
The ideal type of shoelaces for this technique are two wide-bodied, flat laces – about 54 inches in length. Once tied together, the shoelaces are draped around the neck and down the center of the chest where they are knotted just above the inframammary crease. They are then wrapped underneath each inframammary fold before being crossed behind the back, wrapped below each fold once more, and tied in a knot.
Which Option Is Right for Me?
Determining whether the shoelace “breast cast” is the best approach for correcting implant asymmetry depends on several factors – including the type and severity of the asymmetry, the stage of healing, and individual aesthetic goals. Dr. Mills typically recommends this non-surgical method in cases where the implant has shifted slightly during the early healing period, resulting in a “double bubble” appearance, mild malposition, or uneven breast shape.
In cases when asymmetry is more significant or caused by other underlying issues, breast revision surgery (or breast implant exchange) may still be the most effective path forward. During your consultation, Dr. Mills can perform a detailed assessment to help determine whether this innovative, conservative technique may be appropriate for you, or if a more traditional surgical approach would offer better results.
