The breast implant itself is a silicone sac that is placed within the woman’s breast. What fills these sacs is probably one of the biggest issues in breast implant procedures. The silicone sac can be filled with either a saltwater solution (saline) or silicone gel. The FDA currently does not approve the use for silicone gel, except for certain cases. Silicone-gel breast implants can be used for breast reconstruction, or if a woman needs to have their current breast implant repaired, or if the woman is involved in a study of silicone-gel breast implants. Other cases also qualify for use of silicone-gel implants. On the other hand, saline filled breast implants are currently approved by the FDA and used by plastic surgery centers in Orange County and all across the U.S. There are other implants available, but none approved by the FDA.
